Berkshire

The Royal County of Berkshire is a home county and is very popular with commuters to London because of its close proximity to the Capital.

Berkshire is home to the world renowned Windsor Castle, Legoland, Highclere Castle, Ascot Racecourse and Windsor Great Park. The county has a good mix of thriving towns with a plentiful supply of pretty villages in stunning countryside. Berkshire is a county in high demand which results hefty house prices but the short commute to London goes some way to making up for this. Schooling in the area is also excellent and makes Berkshire a great choice for families.

Schools in Berkshire

Berkshire has a large number of well-known private and independent schools including the world renowned Eton College. Other schools include, Wellington College, Heathfield, St Mary’s Ascot, Highfield, Pangbourne and Downe House.

Berkshire has six grammar schools, two in Reading, the Reading School and Kendrick School, and four in Slough, St Bernard’s Catholic Grammar School, Upton Court Grammar School, Herschel Grammar School and Burnham Grammar School.

For additional state schools consider the following, Maiden Erlegh School (Reading), Baylis Court School (Slough) or Kennet School (Newbury). 

Berkshire Key Towns

Slough

Slough is conveniently located approximately 24 miles from central London on the M4. The town is large and offers a diverse range of housing, easily commutable to the Capital on the Great Western Main Line.Slough is only 3 miles from the highly desirable Windsor which offers a great range of restaurants, cafes and shops. Reading is also just 20 miles away.For leisure and recreation, Farnham Park Golf Club, Wexham Park Golf Club and Richings Park Golf Club are all nearby and so is Ascot racecourse and Guards Polo Club.

Windsor

Windsor is a stunning and highly desirable place to live. The focal point of the town is Windsor Castle and Windsor Great Park which attract large volumes of tourists in the summer months.Shopping in Windsor can be found in the Royal Windsor Shopping Centre, an old converted railway station which dates back to 1851. Further retail outlets can be found along Peascod Street and Bridgewater Way.The River Thames runs through Windsor and many of the prettiest villages in the area can be found on the twists and turns of the great river, including Eton and Bray. Other villages of note are Ascot, Fyfield, Holyport, Dorney, Sunningdale, Old Windsor and Eton Wick.

Wokingham

Wokingham is a market town about 40 miles West of London. The town has recently been voted, by The Daily Mail as the best place to bring up children.Wokingham is well located for commuting into London or to Reading via the M4 and there is a regular train service into the Capital. The town is the perfect place for keen golfers with five golf courses within easy reach, including, Wokingham Family Golf Course and Sand Martins Golf Club. Wokingham also boasts a leisure centre, indoor and outdoor pool, small theatre and cinema.

Reading

In the past Reading was probably most famous for being a university town but more recently it has become well known for the large companies that reside there, including, Informatica Software Ltd, Microsoft, and Agra. The big four accounting firms also have offices in Reading, Deloitte, PwC, Ernst & Young and KPMG.Reading has one of the busiest train stations and you can find trains to London almost every 7 minutes, making it particularly popular with commuters.For leisure and recreation, Reading has two fantastic shopping centres, The Oracle which has over 90 stores and Broad Street Mall. Central Swimming Pool offers an amazing swimming complex with four separate pools, one with a 3 board high diving pit. Popular villages near Reading include Pangbourne, Goring, Streatley and Sonning Common.

Newbury

Newbury is a pretty and prosperous market town which is extremely popular with commuters to London. The town is surrounded by pretty downland villages (Watership Down Country) including Eastbury, Highclere, East Garston, West and East Ilsley and Stanford Dingley. Newbury town centre has good shopping facilities with most shops being found in the Parkway Shopping Centre, including John Lewis and Waitrose.Employment prospects in Newbury are good with Vodafone having a large presence in the town, Xerox being based at Royal Wootton Bassett and Reading being just 20 miles away with its plethora of IT companies.
