Devizes, the name meaning "on the boundary", as the town was once on the boundary of three manors.  A small town, but with nice buildings, that once had a castle which was demolished in the Civil War, the present one is 19th century.

St John's church was built for the castle in about 1120, and has an impressive tower; the town has another church, St Mary's. Both have Norman structures.

Timbered buildings dating from 1500 can be seen in St John’s Alley, as well as the Georgian buildings in the town. There is a market cross with an inscription about Ruth Pierce, a local woman who died suddenly after cheating in the market. A big attraction at Devizes is the Kennet and Avon Canal which passes the town, and its famous 29 locks built by Rennie, one of the largest flights in the country .

Communications Devizes has excellent communication links to Chippenham, Swindon, Warminster and Salisbury. The nearest mainline train stations can be found at Pewsey and Westbury with trains going to Bristol/Bath and London.  The nearest international airport is in Bristol.

Schools There are a number of primary schools and public schools include Dauntsey’s near Devizes, with other excellent schools located in Salisbury such as Godolphin, Leaden Hall and Chafyn Grove.  Salisbury also has both girls and boys grammar schools.

Landscape The area is dominated by the Kennet and Avon Canal which follows an 87 mile course from Reading through to Bath and is an excellent place for fishing, cycling and walking.  The villages of Lacock, Castle Coombe and Bishops Canning are extremely picturesque and all well worth a visit.
