Dorchester is a county town lying on the River Frome in southern central Dorset. The 19th century author Thomas Hardy lived nearby for many years and called the town ‘Casterbridge’ in his masterwork ‘The Mayor of Casterbridge' (1886). The unfortunate Tolpuddle Martyrs were sent to Australia from the town’s Old Crown Court. Dorchester was a Roman settlement known as Durnovaria.
Communications Dorchester has two train stations, West & South, and only 5 minutes apart. The South line falls on the main line between Weymouth and London Waterloo. Dorchester West serves passengers from the West Country.
Schools The town has two private schools, three primary schools, two middle schools and one secondary school, including the Thomas Hardye School, Sunninghill Prep School and nearby Milton Abbey School.
Landscape Dorchester lies in the heart of Thomas Hardy country which boasts local landmarks such as Cerne Abbas and Durdle Door. The ancient earthwork of Maiden Castle lies close by and south of the town is the Maumbury Ring, a Stone Age site transformed by the Romans into an amphitheatre.
Events There are many local events held around Dorchester the most famous being the Great Dorset Steam Fair which is a short drive away.
